Wake Forest University was founded in 1834 just outside the state capital of Raleigh, North Carolina. In 1941, the medical school moved to Winston-Salem, and the rest of the College followed in 1956. Offering the personal attention of a small liberal arts college, coupled with the breadth and global relevancy of a leading research institution, Wake Forest claims the distinction of being the nation's premier collegiate university. Wake Forest is consistently ranked among the top 25 universities in the nation. Our mission is to educate the whole person, graduating students who seek purpose-filled lives while building a community dedicated to serving humanity in the spirit of our motto, Pro Humanitate.
Wake Forest balances the personal attention of a liberal arts college with the academic vitality and broad opportunities of a research university. Relatively small in size – less than 5,000 undergraduates – enables the University to create rich interdisciplinary programs within and across approximately 40 programs of study. Wake Forest also offers graduate programs with the Graduate School of Arts and Science, School of Business, School of Divinity, School of Law and School of Medicine.
At the heart of Wake Forest is the teacher-scholar ideal. In small classrooms and cutting-edge research labs, professors practice their art with keen interest in students and their lives. More than fifty percent of the student body spends a semester abroad at University-owned houses in London, Venice, or Vienna, or in programs offered at universities in France, Spain, Japan, and Cuba.
Athletics are integral to the college experience – and at Wake Forest, there are plenty of occasions to wave the black and gold. Competing in the NCAA Division I Atlantic Coast Conference, Wake Forest teams are consistently among the leaders both athletically and academically. In recent years, the Demon Deacons have won national championships in field hockey (three times) and men's soccer, achieved a No. 1 ranking in men's basketball and played in three football bowl games, including the Orange Bowl.
